If we use the numbers for average life expectancy and assume that your adult life starts at 18 years old, then you’ve got about 68 years as an adult (86 – 18 = 68). Perhaps a little less on average. Or a little more if you’re lucky.

Take those 68 years and multiply them by 365 days each year, and we end up with 24,820 days.

So — 25,000 mornings.

That’s what you get in your adult life. 25,000 times you get to open your eyes, face the day, and decide what to do next.

The strategies I’ll be talking about are designed to help you identify the Menials within your current schedule, then cull them down to minimum levels — leaving more time for the things that matter most — which you’ll find we call our MITs.

The value of your MITs should vastly outweigh the value of your Menial work, but this doesn’t mean that we’re going to pursue a schedule in which all of your time is invested in depth. In this sense, we should see the goal of this video as taming the Menial footprint in your schedule — not eliminating it. It’s about organizing the chaos.

Menial behavior, though satisfying in the moment, is not conducive to creativity. With systems (MITs), on the other hand, you can ensure the type of behaviors more likely to instigate innovation.

Entropy, the most powerful law of thermodynamics, will eventually win out. There is no other case. However, in this video, we teach you how to slow this process down, and put up a respectable fight against the laws of nature.

When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it.
